The Bull and Swan at Burghley

The Bull and Swan at Burghley

The Bull & Swan at Burghley St Martins Stamford Lincolnshire PE9 2LJ, Lincolnshire
    • Hotel

Once upon a time there was a drinking club at Burghley House. It was founded by The 5th Earl of Exeter in 1684 and it was called The Honourable Order of Little Bedlam. It had an eclectic bunch of members: The Baptist Earl of Gainsborough was known as Greyhound, The Hon Charles Bertie was The Stag and The Earl of Denbigh was Tyger amongst other nefarious characters. They are not sure who The Bull (rumoured to be The Hon Charles Cecil) and The Swan were and nor are we sure that the club dined at this historic Stamford Public House - but it is highly likely they did. They would have drunk locally brewed ales, feasted on Burghley Estate and other local produce and created total bedlam. Things have a habit of coming round and we are delighted to invite you to dine on our local produce, sup our fine ales and obviously behave very, very well!

Our 5-star venue experts save you time and it's completely free.

The William Cecil at Stamford re-opened in late July 2011 after a complete refurbishment inside and out. The hotel lies within the magnificent Burghley Estate, the centrepiece of which is Burghley House, one of the foremost Treasure Houses of the United Kingdom. Add this to the beauty of Stamford and The William Cecil must be one of the best located hotels in the country. Within a 2 minute drive from the A1, the hotel, formerly known as The Lady Anne's Hotel, is perfect for both leisure and business uses. Add an ounce of magic, a sprinkle of quirkiness, a tablespoon of shabby-chic, a gram of eccentricity, a dollop of luxury and a mound of charm and you get a Hillbrooke Hotel. Our restaurant does recipes too – local, fresh and seasonal. Completely delicious. We love making people happy at Weddings and private parties - and we know that when you can’t get time off for these celebrations, you may want to have business meetings and corporate days out, which you'll want to hold in a thought-provoking and relaxed environment. We can’t do it all though so we have had to make some hard decisions: no chintz; no drizzles, towers or stacks; no Magners; no managers in suits; no staff name badges; no mini-bars; no compulsory service charge... Sorry At The William Cecil travelling away on business doesn’t mean you have to give up your home comforts. Friendly, unobtrusive and relaxed service characterise The William Cecil’s approach to our corporate business. We are particularly focused on creating a comfortable and relaxing meeting space without compromising on quality. Three meeting rooms accommodate from 10 to 120 delegates. The Hotel also has a wireless network throughout and all our conference rooms have integrated audio technology, as well as oodles of natural daylight. Our conference and events co-ordinator is on hand at all stages to offer advice and a personalised service to help ensure your days run smoothly. Getting to us is simple too – just off the A1 with quick rail links to London and the North.
