About the venue

In 1876, Eduard Sacher founded the Hotel Sacher in Vienna.

Soon after its creation, the Sacher became a world famous meeting point for politicians, artists and the aristocracy. Eduard Sacher was the son of the creator of the Original Sacher-Torte, a unique chocolate cake. Since 1934, the hotel has been run by the Gürtler family, who is very intent on maintaining the hotel’s old tradition. A simple glance from its windows confirms the hotel’s spectacular location. It is directly in the city centre, close to the pedestrian shopping area Kärntner Straße, opposite the Opera House and only a short walk away from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg Imperial Palace and the elegant Ringstraße, a road which boasts an impressive array of Vienna’s major sites, such as the Burgtheater Imperial Court Theatre and the City Hall. The Hotel Sacher Wien, which opened in 1876, occupies an enviable spot on Philharmonikerstrasse directly across from Vienna's State Opera. It has a storied past and served as a popular setting for spy movies (this is where Graham Greene was inspired to write the script for the 1949 film noir The Third Man). Equally famous are its classic, jewel-toned interiors. Guest rooms are decorated with antiques, silk curtains and select works from the museum-worthy collectionof paintings. Two presidential suites, Madame Butterfly and the Magic Flute, are as grand as the personages who have checked in, and both overlook the opera house. The top flooe, meanwhile, boasts more contemporary accomodations, including suites with panaoramic terraces.
