The Spread Eagle has stood imposingly in the heart of historic Thame since the 16th century, famous for its farmer’s market and mile long Main Street. During its colourful history the hotel has played host to Charles II, French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars, famous politicians and writers such as Evelyn Waugh. The Georgian facade is instantly recognisable by all, drawn in by the un-miss able 30-ft inn sign originally designed by Lytton Strachey’s Carrington which has welcomed all our guests for nearly a century. Our discerning customers needs for a warm welcome, attentive but discreet service and excellent food and wine has not changed since the days of John Fothergill, the hotel’s pioneer innkeeper. Since the 1920’s, the Spread Eagle has been synonymous with surpassing customer’s expectations, becoming a mecca for glitterati through the ages, forever adapting to changing needs and demands. We are entering a new chapter in the history of the hotel with an exciting refurbishment programme planned for all our bedrooms, commencing early 2009. Contemporary styling and sleek design set within unceremonious yet traditional surroundings is sure to present guests a unique experience, ensuring the Spread Eagle’s reputation for innovative hospitality is maintained and carried forward for generations to come. The Spread Eagle has been welcoming guests for over a century, offering a flexible approach to meetings and events. Being located in the centre of Thame ensures excellent motorway and rail links to both London and Oxford, along with Heathrow International Airport being easily reachable. The George Hotel was built in the 16th century and believed to have originally been the Dower House to Wallingford Castle, the remains of which can still be seen in the beautiful gardens to the rear of the hotel. In 1517 Geoffrey & Elizabeth Baynton established The George & Dragon here and so became the first owners of what was to become a busy coaching Inn. Since then The George has welcomed many travellers and guests. Not least, by name, was the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin who occupied a room above the Courtyard from which he would escape the law, via a trap door in the floor. Many of the rooms still exhibit their original features. Among these is the haunted Teardrop Room, with its strange and interesting story and symbols on the wall. Under the ownership of Peel Hotels, the hotel has undergone continuous upgrading and modernisation of the building and its facilities to provide its guests with the very best in charming, characterfull surroundings. Over the years the hotel has been extended and modernised to provide every modern facility in 39 bedrooms ranging from Single rooms with bathroom to a large Family room. All rooms have complimentary Tea/Coffee making facilities, hair dryer and trouser press. Many have the addition of a safe and ironing centre. Free Wireless Broadband Internet is in every room and throughout the public areas and meeting rooms of the hotel. A free Internet kiosk is available to all guests. All public areas and meeting rooms are located on Ground Floor with easy level access from our Free Car park at the rear of the hotel. Rooms lead onto the heated central courtyard with its tables and parasols providing a popular oasis for relaxing and socialising The Tavern Bar with its ancient oak beams and log fire makes a cosy respite at the end of a hard day. Wealhs Bistro is in the older original part of the hotel with low beamed ceiling giving it a charm all of its own. Our main function suite, the Sir John Hedges Rooms, accommodating up to 150 persons, has been redecorated and upgraded in the past year. Wide access doors allow entry of anything as large as a car, making this ideal for product launches. The Private Drawing Room and Wealh’s Room are perfect for smaller meetings, conferences and other events of up to 60 persons.

HISTORY The Roman remains, including the Orpheus Mosaic, have been found on the site which is thought to have been on an early supply route. The original Littlecote House was built during the 13th and 14th centuries as part of a medieval settlement and was inhabited by the de Calstone family from around 1290. When William Darrell married Elizabeth de Calstone, he inherited the house and his family went on to build the original brick mansion in the early 16th century. Littlecote has seen an impressive line-up of royalty pass through its doors. This is where Henry VIII courted Jane Seymour. Where Elizabeth I visited John Popham, her Attorney-General, in 1601. Alexander Popham converted the former Medieval Hall into The Cromwellian Chapel. And the Popham?s royal guest list grew increasingly impressive: Charles II and William of Orange all visited the house. In 1804, Littlecote passed into the hands of the Leyborne-Pophams. Whether it be enjoying a relaxing break with friends or entertaining staff, Littlecote House offers the perfect refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
