    Ardington House

    Ardington House

    Ardington, Oxon,, OX12 8QA
    • Country house

Ardington House has always been full of interesting people from all parts of the world and is renowned for its warm welcome and traditional hospitality. In the countryside just a few miles south of Oxford stands Ardington House. You will instantly be impressed with the stunning aspects and wonderful landscape, upon entering the house you will be greeted by the most remarkable (and rare) double staircase Hall. Like Ardington itself, there is an easy grace that will impress your clients but leave them feeling completely at home. As you would expect from a classic Georgian house, the rooms are all beautifully proportioned with large windows that allow light to flood in, creating a real sense of well being. At night and on cold days there are wonderful open fires to relax by and because this is a private family home the decoration is both tasteful and authentic, creating a very comfortable atmosphere. What everyone adores about Ardington is the dedication to good living. Along with all the usual country pursuits we love the fact that the village pub is only a short walk away. With stables, a tennis court and a heated outdoor pool there is plenty to do.

HISTORY The Roman remains, including the Orpheus Mosaic, have been found on the site which is thought to have been on an early supply route. The original Littlecote House was built during the 13th and 14th centuries as part of a medieval settlement and was inhabited by the de Calstone family from around 1290. When William Darrell married Elizabeth de Calstone, he inherited the house and his family went on to build the original brick mansion in the early 16th century. Littlecote has seen an impressive line-up of royalty pass through its doors. This is where Henry VIII courted Jane Seymour. Where Elizabeth I visited John Popham, her Attorney-General, in 1601. Alexander Popham converted the former Medieval Hall into The Cromwellian Chapel. And the Popham?s royal guest list grew increasingly impressive: Charles II and William of Orange all visited the house. In 1804, Littlecote passed into the hands of the Leyborne-Pophams. Whether it be enjoying a relaxing break with friends or entertaining staff, Littlecote House offers the perfect refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

    • ·7 meeting rooms

St Edmund Hall wishes to maximise the use of its facilities during the Oxford vacations and welcomes conferences, courses and summer schools, of any size, during mid-March to mid-April and from the end of June to October. Situated in the centre of the City of Oxford on the "High", a few steps from Christ Church Meadows and the Isis, the great Examination Schools, Radcliffe Camera, the Cathedral and the bustling shops of the "Broad", St Edmund Hall is well placed for sightseeing and shopping. St Edmund Hall was the first college to sense the need for conference facilities in Oxford, and our twenty years experience shows. Many of the facilities, the great Wolfson Hall and adjacent rooms were built with conferences and banquets in mind. Most of our conferences come back year after year, particularly for the "high table" cuisine, and the professionalism of the College staff, knowing that they can have a relaxed, yet stimulating break, enjoying the ancient quadrangle or relaxing in the former churchyard that is now the college garden.
