Most important decisions are made while fishing… A confidential board meeting away from the office. A weekend as a reward for your group’s hard work. A small conference or a secret merger summit. The Samling is well suited for all of them. Secluded and peaceful, it offers complete privacy and a perfect place to do important business without any of the usual distractions. And while you’re miles from the nearest city, you’ll have all the facilities essential to the way you do your business. Take the Conference Centre in the old stables for example. It seats fourteen people in complete comfort. It is equipped and regularly updated with all the audio-visual and communication tools that a forward-looking company expects. Or, on a more intimate level, there are a number of syndicate rooms for smaller meetings. While, a few yards away, The Dutch Barn Theatre can comfortably seat up to sixty delegates. Perhaps it’s these first class facilities that explain why so many of our guests decide to return to The Samling. More likely, it’s the opportunity to mix business with the pleasure of a unique country hideaway.     The foundation stone for the building itself was laid in 1890, and the house took some five years to complete. It was first opened as a hotel in 1930. However, there are artifacts in the hotel which date back as far as 1664. Large imposing rooms, oak-panelled and mellowed with the years, a collection of fine oil paintings, ornate carved fireplaces and the magnificent oak staircase tell their own story of a hotel rich in history and character. Blessed with so many architectural and decorative examples of our heritage, not to mention hidden treasures, such as the original mosaic floors in the porch, laid by craftsman brought over from Italy, the house is listed as one of national and historic interest. The Hotel's outstanding interior and location, made it a natural choice for the classic English country house in Alfred Hitchcock's production of "The Paradine Case", starring Gregory Peck, and more recently in the BBC's portrayal of the life of Donald Campbell. The Langdale Chase history book charting the story of Langdale Chase Hotel from 1890 to present is available from reception for a small fee.
