The earliest parts of Bodkin House have their origins in a 12th century priory which was destroyed by Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries. The present building began life in the mid 17th century as a coaching inn serving the Bath-Gloucester route and was extended and upgraded in the Georgian period. Many famous people have visited the establishment including Jane Austen who came as a child and later mentioned her visits in her novel Northanger Abbey.
