    The George Hotel was built in the 16th century and believed to have originally been the Dower House to Wallingford Castle, the remains of which can still be seen in the beautiful gardens to the rear of the hotel. In 1517 Geoffrey & Elizabeth Baynton established The George & Dragon here and so became the first owners of what was to become a busy coaching Inn. Not least, by name, was the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin who occupied a room above the Courtyard from which he would escape the law, via a trap door in the floor.
